Job Description

POSITION: CERTIFIED NURSES AIDE 

DEPARTMENT: NURSING SERVICES

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: DIRECTOR OFNURSING

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY:

A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a non-professional worker who, under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, carries out simple nursing functions. These include attending the personal needs of selected residents, procuring and returning equipment, running errands and assisting in the general maintenance of the nursing unit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Gives hygienic care: bathing, assisting with cleaning teeth, back rubs, providing water to wash hands and face, nail care, combing hair.

2. Gives, removes and cleans bedpan.

3. Prepares residents for meals, assists residents to eat.

4. Assists the Nurses in the care of residents as directed.

5. Reports all observations concerning residents to a Team Leader.

6. Makes beds, occupied and unoccupied.

7. Assists patients in moving and turning, and getting in and out of bed, and walking as needed.

8. Keeps water pitchers clean and filled with fresh drinking water.

9. Assists in keeping department neat and clean by: cleaning bedside unit, cleaning nursing equipment, keeping service areas in order (utility room, linen room, and kitchen).

10. Assists in keeping residents’ flowers fresh and watered.

11. Charts pertinent information on flow sheet as directed by Team Leader.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Certification or eligible for certification in the State of Florida.

Preference given to the applicant who can provide evidence of previous satisfactory experience as CNA.

Male and female are both eligible.

7 – 3 SHIFT

1. Report on duty promptly at 7:00 am in full uniform including name badge, clock in and report to nurse in charge of unit.

2. Check assignment, review Instruction Sheets and receive report.

a. Get residents ready for breakfast-which 11-7 has not completed.

b. A.M. care – faces and hands washed, teeth or dentures cleaned.

c. Bathroom or bedpan before eating.

d. Sit residents up in bed with over bed table in place or out of bed to chair.

e. Pass trays – assist as needed – fix eggs, butter toast, fix coffee etc.

f. Feed residents as needed – report any difficulty in eating or change in appetite to nurse.

g. Remove all trays from rooms to be returned to the kitchen.

3. Get linen ready.

4. Daily baths and showers to assigned residents. Provide privacy as per regulations. Knock on doors before entering rooms.

a. Mouth care – teeth or dentures daily.

b. Back care – back rubs, skin care

c. Peri-care.

d. Report to nurse any unusual findings with resident.

e. If resident needs any treatments for decubitus (wound care etc.) the nurse will do these – tell her when resident is ready.

5. Residents out of bed. Check those who need to be ready for therapy.

a. All residents are to be out of bed - unless otherwise ordered by physician.

b. All residents are to be dressed appropriately (no holes/rips or torn clothing).

c. Residents should be taken to TV room, dining room, activities, physical therapy room or outdoors as tolerated.

d. Complete all restorative care as ordered.

6. Assist with admissions and discharges as necessary.

a. Introduce self. Obtain height and weight of resident.

b. Bring resident to room and assist to undress and unpack.

c. Fill in clothing list and admission sheet completely.

d. Escort all discharge residents out of building.

7. Make beds using covered barrels for dirty linen. No linens on floor.

8. Assist with lunches (as with breakfast). Encourage residents to eat in the Dining Room.

9. Report to dining room at 11:30. Prepare residents for lunch. Take assigned residents to the dining room. Ambulate to dining as ordered. Sanitize resident’s hands; offer clothing protectors, or assist resident eating in rooms as assigned. Monitor dining room as assigned.

a. Pass trays – assist as needed.

b. Feed residents as needed – report any difficulty in eating or change in appetite to nurse.

c. Assist residents eating in rooms as assigned; remove all trays from rooms for return to kitchen.

10. Take breaks and lunches as assigned. If one person goes late it holds the next person up.

11. Bring residents to activities in the afternoon.

12. Walk residents as per schedule and to and from dining if able.

13. Check residents every two hours and provide for toileting, restraint release, change of position tec.

14. All residents are to receive fresh water and nourishments per policy. Change water sets and clean ice chest per policy.

15. Review CNA instruction sheet for accuracy – notify nurse of changes as necessary.

16. Prepare residents for care conferences. Take them with you to conference as assigned.

17. Afternoon duties:

a. Special assignments-utility room, linen, closets, etc.

b. Make sure resident rooms are neat – bedside tables clean, bedpans and urinals clean and put away. Closet draws are tidy and neat, clothing on hangers.

c. Empty catheters.

d. Make all empty beds in your assignment and prepare room for new admission.

e. Complete all charting; flow sheets, restorative documentation etc. Notify nurse of any changes or problems.

f. All personal items in plastic bags labeled with resident names.

18. Make final rounds and report off to Charge Nurse notifying her of any resident care issues or needs.

3 – 11 SHIFT

1. Report on duty promptly at 3:00 pm in full uniform including name badge, clock in and report to nurse in charge of unit.

2. Receive assignment from charge nurse. Make rounds.

a. Pick up and deliver water sets and ice chest per policy. 

b. Get linen ready.

c. Weigh new admissions and take vital signs.

d. Vital signs as required.

e. Walk resident as per schedule and complete all other restorative care requirements.

3. Prepare residents for dinner. Take assigned residents to the dining room. Ambulate to dining as ordered. Sanitize resident’s hands, offer clothing protectors. Monitor dining room as assigned.

a. Pass trays – assist as needed.

b. Feed residents as needed – report any difficulty in eating or change in appetite to nurse.

4. Assist residents eating in room as assigned; remove all trays from rooms for return to kitchen. Take breaks and dinner as assigned.

5. Give baths/showers as assigned.

6. Do p.m. care on residents.

a. Wash hands and face, mouth care –put dentures in solution in denture cups.

b. Give back rub – -check skin and report any changes to nurse.

c. Put night clothes on.

d. Give bedpan or take to the bathroom. Give peri-care.

e. Put to bed. Change bed lines as needed. No linens on floor.

f. Organize residents’ closet and draws.

7. Pass H.S. nourishments.

8. Make hourly rounds on residents offering toileting, restraint release, change of position, etc.

9. Always knock on doors before entering room and provide privacy for residents at all times.

10. Report any unusual findings to nurse in charge of wing.

11. Evening duties:

a. Special assignments-utility room, linen, closets, etc.

b. Make sure resident rooms are neat – bedside tables clean, bedpans and urinals clean and put away.

c. Empty catheters.  

d. Complete all charting; flow sheets, restorative - report any changes to nurse in charge.

e. Complete dining room rotation daily.

f. Check that all empty beds have been cleaned and are made up for new admissions.

g. Review CNA Instruction Sheets – notify nurse of any changes needed.

h. Work quietly at night.

12. Make final rounds and report off to Charge Nurse.

11 – 7  SHIFT

1. Report on duty promptly at11:00 pm in full uniform including name badge, clock in and report to nurse in charge.

2. Receive assignment from Charge Nurse – Make rounds.

3. Get linen ready.

4. Make hourly rounds to all residence. Changing linens as necessary

- No linen on floors

- Take off bed spreads

- Ensure dentures are placed in denture cups

- Provide peri-care, toileting, and change position every two hours. 

5. Report any unusual findings to Charge Nurse immediately. Note any changes in skin condition.

6. Provide privacy to residents at all times.

7. Answer all lights immediately and quietly perform necessary duties. Do not turn overhead lights on - Use lights over individual resident beds if necessary. Knock before entering rooms.

8. Investigate all unusual noises.

9. Work quietly – Remember this shift is the sleeping time for residents.

10. Take breaks and lunches as assigned.

11. Absolutely no sleeping while on duty i.e. hall-ways, resident’s rooms or empty rooms, TV room, etc...

12. Morning check for cleanliness and neatness

a. Utility room.

b. Linen closet.

c. Bed side units and over bed tables.

d. Empty waste and trash baskets.

e. Check shower rooms.

f. Complete any special assignments – refrigerators, sterilizing bedpans, urinals etc.

13. Pass fresh water to all residents per policy.

14. Empty catheters bags.

15. Complete all documentation - flow sheets, restorative etc. Check CNA instruction sheets and notify nurse of any changes needed.

16. Collect urine specimens, and all other lab specimens as directed by Charge Nurse.

17. See hallways are clear at all times.

18. Give showers as assigned and do A.M. care on residents - faces and hands – teeth and dentures cleaned and put in mouth – bathroom or bedpan – set resident up in bed for breakfast with over bed table in place or out of bed to chair.

19. Make final rounds and report off to Charge Nurse.
